The best gyms in Prague, and how to pick the right one for you

We've been coaching in Prague since 2011, and the honest answer to “what's the best gym in Prague” is: it depends on what you need it to do. A gym that's perfect for a 25-year-old who loves lifting alone is the wrong gym for a 45-year-old who hasn't trained in ten years.

So instead of a ranking, here's how the different kinds of gyms in Prague compare, the questions worth asking any of them, and where we fit. And where we don't.

The kinds of gyms in Prague

Big gyms and chains

Lots of machines, long opening hours, a low monthly price. Great if you already know what you're doing and you'll go on your own. The catch: nobody notices when you stop coming, and most people do.

Best for
Experienced, self-motivated people who want flexibility.

Personal trainers

One coach and all of their attention. The fastest way to learn and the most expensive way to keep training week after week. Ask whether they handle food too, and how they measure progress.

Best for
Total privacy, rehab after an injury, or your first few months.

Boutique studios

Yoga, pilates, spinning, boxing. Excellent at one thing, often with a great class culture. Usually not a complete plan for losing weight or getting strong.

Best for
People who love one discipline and want more of it.

CrossFit gyms

Coached group classes that mix strength and conditioning, with a community around them. Quality depends almost entirely on the coaching, so ask how they start beginners and how big the classes are. Prague has around ten licensed CrossFit gyms.

Best for
People who want a coach, a plan and a crowd that notices.

Outdoor workout parks

Free pull-up and dip bars in parks across the city. Perfect if you're disciplined and know your way around bodyweight training. CrossFit Committed started in Letná park in 2011, so we're fans.

Best for
Anyone on a budget who doesn't need a coach.

Seven questions to ask any gym in Prague

Ask them on the phone or at the front desk. The answers tell you more than the equipment list.

  1. 01

Will a coach be there every time I train, or only at the start?

Most people don't fail at training, they fail at the third week alone with a machine.

  2. 02

How do you start complete beginners?

A tour and a membership card is not an answer. Look for coached sessions before you're on your own.

  3. 03

How do you measure progress, beyond the scale?

Body fat and muscle move in opposite directions when training works. The scale can't see either.

  4. 04

Do you help with food, or only with training?

If weight is your goal, food is most of the answer.

  5. 05

In which language does the coaching run?

Not the reception, the coaching. Cues during a heavy lift need to be in the language you think in.

  6. 06

How far is it from my home or office?

The best gym in Prague is the one you'll actually reach at 6 a.m. in February.

  7. 07

What happens when I miss a week?

Work trips and sick kids are certain. Ask how they get you back without starting from zero.

Where CrossFit Committed fits, honestly

We're a private, coach-led gym in Žižkov, Prague 3, and a licensed CrossFit affiliate since 2011. Most of our members are 35 to 50, busy, and came to us to lose weight or get strong again. Coaching runs in English.

We're a good fit if

  • You're over 35, busy, and want a coach to tell you what to do.
  • You want to lose weight or get strong again, and see it in numbers.
  • You want to train in English.
  • You'd like a room of people who notice when you're missing.

We're not your gym if

  • You want the cheapest membership in Prague.
  • You want to train alone at 11 p.m. Our last class starts at 18:30.
  • You want rows of machines and a mirror wall.
  • You want a six-pack by summer, guaranteed.

Why people who tried other gyms stayed here

“CFC transformed my attitude to fitness. I no longer have to drag myself to the gym or to do another long run. Now I genuinely look forward to going to workout. Great coaches, great community. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to get stronger, fitter and happier in the process.”

“Very pleasant gym with a really great program of group lessons after the initial sorting according to performance. There is always a trainer available who is willing to advise. Unlike circuit training, where I couldn't stand it due to back pain, because everything had to be fast and explosive and one could easily make a mistake in technique, here the emphasis is on the correct execution of the exercises and nothing hurts me.”

“I moved to Prague and was looking for something new, since the classic gym was no longer the right thing. I googled a little and came across CrossFit. CrossFit Committed appealed to me and I'm glad I took the plunge. Friendly approach, great trainers, perfect space and most importantly, a perfect community of people.”

Other things people ask about gyms in Prague

What is the best gym in Prague for beginners?
One that starts you with a coach instead of a membership card. Ask how many coached sessions you get before you're on your own, and whether classes are led by a coach. At CrossFit Committed it's four coached sessions before your first class, and a coach at every class after that.
Which gyms in Prague coach in English?
Ask whether the coaching itself runs in English, not just the front desk. At CrossFit Committed every class does: Joey is American and about half our members come from outside the Czech Republic.
How much does a gym cost in Prague?
Anything from budget memberships to fully coached programs that include nutrition and body scans. Compare what's included rather than the monthly number: a cheap membership you stop using costs more than one you actually use.
What's a good gym in Prague 3 or near Vinohrady?
We're biased, but CrossFit Committed is at Hartigova 1704/136 in Žižkov, two minutes from the Ohrada tram stop and close to Vinohrady and Karlín, with parking in the courtyard.
Is CrossFit better than a regular gym?
For people who need coaching and accountability, usually yes. For people who love training alone and know exactly what they're doing, a regular gym is fine. The best one is the one you'll stick with.
