My name’s Joey Scafidi and I’m the owner and head coach at CrossFit Committed. I discovered CrossFit in early 2009 while searching for a new fitness program. I thought I was in great shape at the time but after peeling myself off of the floor after my first CrossFit workout I knew that there was still a lot of work to be done.
Shortly after realizing that I couldn’t go back to the old way I had been training, I signed up for my Level 1 seminar in early 2010. Early in 2011 CrossFit Committed was born and now I’m proud to say that CrossFit Committed has grown into one of the best training facilities around. I’m extremely lucky to be surrounded by a great team of talented trainers.
It’s a great feeling to know that you’ve found your passion in life and for me that passion is helping others become better at life through fitness and performance. I’ve had numerous clients tell me that CrossFit has changed their lives and it makes me extremely proud to know that I’ve had a part in that.
My CrossFit journey started in early 2013 when I was searching for a new sports program. As a
teenager I was used to having dance training every day for 3 hours and spending weekends
hiking and cycling with my parents, but when I started studying at university and going to work,
my fitness suffered. One day, in the pursuit of my lost “shape”, I found myself at CrossFit
Committed. During the first classes I thought I was going to die after the WARM UP!
Many things have changed in my life ever since. My career path took a 180-degree turn from
marketing specialist to a full-time CrossFit coach and gym owner. I obtained the CrossFit Level
1, Level 2 as well as the CrossFit Kids certification and I currently coach at both CrossFit
Committed and CrossFit Committed South. I hold the Czech Fitness Trainer and the Czech
Weightlifting Trainer license and I have taken part in various Czech and International seminars
Why do I do and coach CrossFit?
Because it gives me is much more than fitness. I met the best
community of people here that support each other at the gym and outside of it. I love helping
people to find their better selves through CrossFit, to have a deeper understanding of their body
and fitness and to feel stronger and healthier day by day.

My first experience with CrossFit was in 2009 in my hometown in New York. After traveling for a while I ended up in Prague in July 2011. For my first 18 months here I neglected fitness completely until I realized how out of shape I had become. I needed to find some motivation to get myself moving again so I signed up for the Prague half Marathon in January of 2013. After running 21km in 93 minutes in April of that year I thought I was in the best shape of my life. My brother suggested I get back into CrossFit, after a couple flexibility and strength tests with Joey I realized I WAS NOT in the best shape of my life. Needless to say I’ve been working out at CFC ever since.
My favorite part about CrossFit is the fact that it continues to surprise me. There are so many things I’ve been able to accomplish I thought I would never be able to do because of CrossFit. They range from the simple (being able to touch my toes) to the more complex (muscle ups, handstand walking). I love coaching because I’m able to see other people achieve similar goals on what seems like a weekly basis. I’ve also met a ton of awesome people at the gym and most of the people I hang out with in my free time are CFC members or coaches.
Outside of the gym I also work at a preschool teaching English. Most of my time outside of work is dedicated to my hopeless addictions to Major League Baseball, the NHL, Bruce Springsteen and (yes I know this is pathetic) professional wrestling.

I work in the army where there are often contradictory demands on your fitness. The soldier is
supposed to be strong and be able to carry a heavy load, but at the same time you should
ideally be able to run a marathon with that heavy load. CrossFit helps me develop strength and
endurance at the same time. However, CrossFit is the most beneficial for my head. Most of the
obstacles I have encountered in work or in personal life, have given me a great deal of
self-confidence. CrossFit showed me that you can always overcome yourself and push your
limits just a little bit further. These everyday little steps moved me a long way closer to my goals.
I started my journey with Crossfit back in 2016, right here at Crossfit Committed. Before that I
mostly played team sports, ran (basically jogged) quite a bit, and worked out at home. I was
never a fan of globo gyms (in the past at least), so when I was looking for a better strength and
conditioning option than just working out at home, CrossFit seemed like a suitable answer,
especially that it was done in groups, just like in team sports I used to play. I remember when I
first walked into the box, I knew was hooked immediately. It was exactly what I was looking for,
and I have been practicing CrossFit every since, day in and day out.
In my professional life, I worked in software development, mostly in management. Amongst the
main responsibilities I would have in my positions, was mentoring and coaching people on my
teams, guide them through their development and helping them realise their potential. Nothing
brought me more joy than seeing them grow and succeed and excel in their careers. So when
the opportunity to coach at CrossFit Committed came up, I knew it would be a good match,
because as in my day job, helping our members develop and grow their skills and do things they
thought they couldn’t do, brings so much joy to my heart.

I still remember my first CrossFit workout in 2015. At that time I was working as a personal
trainer at a typical fitness centre in Sydney, Australia. My great friend and another trainer from
my gym asked me if I wanted to join him for his CrossFit workout. He ensured me that I will not
need any specific skills, just a bit of strength for deadlift. The workout, called Christine, totally
killed me and I realised I was really unfit.
Since then I started doing CrossFit workouts more often but still at my globo gym. A few months
later the same friend took me to a CrossFit gym and I fell in love with that place. An atmosphere
of community, hard work, camaraderie but even healthy rivalry has become a part of my daily
lifestyle I am living nowadays. I love coaching CrossFit and helping people to get fitter and more
After 9 years living in Australia I have come back to my hometown in March 2019. I did my last
Open workout at CF Committed and knew immediately that I wanted to be part of that team.

I’ve been doing sports all my life. At school I started to race in swimming, gymnastics and
athletics. I’ve always been looking for any sporting activity to give me energy.
I got to CrossFit in 2016 when I was looking for a program that should help me to get into shape
as soon as possible and I will not be bored after the first class. After the first hour I fell in love
with CrossFit. I love the variety of moves we focus on, ranging from gymnastics, weightlifting,
running, also climbing to strongman movements.
In addition, CrossFit is an incredibly friendly community where we all do the same, experience
the same pain and joy, and encourage each other.
What I enjoy the most about coaching is passing on my own experience and helping others to
improve their technique so that they enjoy the WOD as much as possible and enjoy the
My most favourite crossfit words are: “NO REP” 😉
