5 Ways How to Stay Active when Out of Town

Taking a few days off is actually a really good idea from time to time so that our bodies can get some well deserved rest. But we all know that if we do not exercise for more than 7-10 days in a row our comeback to the gym is going to be painful. So what to do when you are going away for a business trip, vacation or just out of town and you want to stay active?

 

1. Drop in to another gym

Dropping into another CrossFit gym is always a lot of fun. I especially love it because you get to meet local people and CrossFit is one big family all around the world. Often times, you can get great tips on what to do or where to eat around town and you can usually get a new CrossFit t-shirt as well. If you want to drop in, contact the gym in advance and tell them when you’d like to come. You can find a drop in etiquette to follow here. 2. Do a WOD in your hotel room

All you need to do is to find movements that do not require any equipment. There are quite a few of those – lunges, squats, push ups, sit ups, burpees, HSPU,… You can as well do the same thing outside and throw in some running or perhaps even find a pull up bar. Here you can find a nice list of WODs that you can try.

Or if you are lucky, your hotel might even have a gym. You can usually find some dumbbells and kettle bells there, so that you can make your workouts even more varied.

 

3. Find an outdoor area to workout in

Nowadays many cities have areas with pull up bars and dip station where you can do street workout or even go on an elliptical. You can work on your pull ups and dips or do a whole workout in one of these parks. You can use this map to find one or just search for street workout parks on Google.

4. Go out for a run

Running is a fun way to explore the area that you are visiting and all you need are some running clothes, shoes and nice weather (obviously you can run even if it rains, but it is not as enjoyable). If you do not run regularly, here are some tips on how to get started.

 

5. Do something active in the area

Lot of people head to the mountains during winter and skiing is a great activity you can do. If you travel to an area that does not have that obvious activity to do, try to Google different activities you can do in that place. Maybe it will be kayaking, paddle boarding or you’ll rent a bike. Playing and learning new sports regularly is also in CrossFit’s prescription for world class fitness and this is a great way how to try something new.

Whether you choose couple of these activities, just one or none, remember that the most important thing is to have fun! I mentioned at the beginning that taking a few days off is a good idea and I do not want you to be obsessed with exercising every day especially if the reason why you are out of town is vacation. Take your vacation as a time to relax and recover. If you manage to do something active, it is great, but if you do not, remember that it is not the end of the world and you can get back on track as soon as you are back home.
